WE1626 Brings OpenWRT Flexibility and 4G Failover to Cost-Sensitive Business Networks
Business Networking | Solution Brief
A compact MT7620A platform gives branch offices, temporary sites and systems integrators a practical way to combine wired access, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and optional cellular backup.
SHENZHEN, China — For distributed businesses, reliable connectivity is often less about peak speed than about deploying a stable, adaptable network at a controlled cost. The WE1626 OpenWRT router addresses that requirement with four LAN ports, USB-based 4G expansion and firmware flexibility in one compact platform.

The deployment problem
Small branches, retail locations, project offices and temporary service sites rarely need a high-cost network appliance. They still need to connect Ethernet equipment, serve wireless users and keep essential operations online when a fixed connection fails.
That creates a familiar trade-off for solution providers: standardize on affordable hardware without giving up firmware control, uplink flexibility or essential network services.
At a glance
- MediaTek MT7620A platform with OpenWRT support
- 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, up to 300 Mbps
- One 10/100 Mbps WAN port and four 10/100 Mbps LAN ports
- USB port for a compatible 4G dongle
- WAN failover, VPN, DHCP, NTP and cloud management support
One platform for wired, wireless and cellular access
Built on the MediaTek MT7620A, the WE1626 provides 2.4 GHz IEEE 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi with a signal rate of up to 300 Mbps. Four external high-gain antennas support practical coverage for small business sites, while the router supports up to 30 associated wireless clients.
Its four LAN ports can connect equipment such as POS terminals, controllers, PCs or cameras. A separate WAN port handles the primary fixed connection, and the USB interface can add cellular access through a compatible 4G dongle.
With WAN failover enabled, a business can use fixed broadband as its main uplink and cellular service as a backup. The same arrangement can also bring internet access to a site before a fixed line is available.

Where the solution fits
Branch and retail locations
The integrated LAN ports reduce the need for an additional switch in smaller installations. That makes the router a practical hub for light-duty office, retail and service-site networks where a handful of wired devices must operate alongside Wi-Fi users.
Business continuity
A compatible 4G USB dongle can provide a secondary uplink when the fixed network is interrupted. For payment, remote support and operational communications, the arrangement can reduce downtime without adding a more complex multi-WAN appliance.
Temporary and remote sites
Pop-up stores, exhibitions and project offices often need connectivity before fixed broadband is installed. The WE1626 can distribute a cellular connection over Wi-Fi and Ethernet from a single device, helping integrators standardize a repeatable deployment kit.

Customized and OEM projects
OpenWRT support gives developers and systems integrators control over routing, VPN, DHCP, wireless configuration and access policies. Supported functions include channel and transmit-power adjustment, hidden SSID, blacklist controls, NTP and cloud management.

The selection question
The WE1626 is aimed at cost-sensitive projects that value OpenWRT flexibility, multiple Ethernet connections and optional USB cellular access. It is a practical fit for light-duty branches, backup links, temporary sites and customized router deployments.
Projects requiring gigabit Ethernet, dual-band Wi-Fi, high user density or operation outside 0°C to 40°C should use a higher-performance or industrial platform. Matching the router to the actual site conditions helps buyers avoid both under-specification and unnecessary hardware cost.
